August 30 Souths played their last match of the season yesterday against Parramatta, going down 34-16. The score not a true reflection of the effort put in by the team. the half time score was 10-10 but Parramatta were lucky to be that close. Parra's first try was from a ball that went so far forward that Jason Smith has been flooded with offers from American Football teams. With Tricky back to his best form, in the 15th minute he made a break and chipped for Craig Wing with no Parramatta player at home, only for Jason Smith to blatantly tackle Wing off the ball. Wing would have been in under the post. Souths got a penalty and Smith 10 in the bin but the penalty didn't compensate for the 6 points the team was denied. With these two events alone Souths would have gone into the sheds at half time 14-4, a very different situation. But on the other side of the coin, Parramatta didn't get to second place on the table for nothing. http://www.souths.com.au\index.html August 30 Sean Garlick and Mark Carroll both retired from football after yesterday's game against Parramatta. Spud was in tears as the final siren went saying "It really hit me when the final siren went, I've been fortunate to play the game I love from the age of four. "The bodies okay, all except for this." said Spud pointing at his very twisted toe. Sean said he didn't realise the game was so close to the end and just want to game to keep going. "The mateship is the best thing that I've had out of Rugby League. There's a lot of blokes I've met that I'll still keep in touch with." In a rather comical twist, Sean was also placed on report for a high tackle. He said later in the dressing rooms, "I hope they don't give me six weeks for that one." http://www.souths.com.au\index.html August 27 South Sydney have started a campaign for the retention of 16 teams in next year NRL competition and beyond. Souths will be approaching Manly, Penrith and Norths to lend their support, as well as all rugby league supporters who believe that this year has been one of the most exciting and unpredictable seasons ever. There will be a rally on October the 10th, with a venue yet to be fixed, to show the NRL what the people really want.
