South Sydney, fielding a team drawn from the Souths Junior League gave Oldham a tough pre-season workout in front of 2,000+ fans at Boundary Park. Oldham raced into an 8-0 lead within 15 minutes, through a try and two goals from left centre, Pat Rich.
