Souths, based in Sydney's Aboriginal heartland of Redfern, also put up the shutters on Mundine yesterday.

"After those comments, we would certainly have to go to the board before we did anything," said Souths chief executive Paul Dunn.

"I don't know whether he wanted to play rugby league but I am saddened by his comments."

Mundine found a sympathiser in fellow boxer, world-ranked super bantamweight and Muslim Skinny Hussein, who said there may have been some truth in his comments.

South Sydney on the other hand has thrived since being readmitted into the premiership building together a competitive squad and securing large sponsorships. Rabbitohs Chief Executive Paul Dunn is doing an outstanding job out Redfern way and has all the attributes to be one of the finest CEO's the game has produced after St.George's Frank Facer and Canterbury's Peter Moore.

Meanwhile, Souths have signed a player from the Moree Boomerangs that coach Craig Coleman has predicted could be "the next Preston Campbell".

Last week at the club's open trials, 22-year-old Chris Swan scored four tries in 15 minutes and was immediately signed to a one-year deal.

This year he sat out the season because of a contract dispute and only played in an Aboriginal knockout at Armidale where he scored 15 tries in four games.

"He is lightning on his feet . . . he can turn on a 20-cent piece and he could be another Preston," an excited Coleman said.

But the words of his uncle, South Sydney president George Piggins, were still fresh in his mind.
"My uncle rang me straight after the squad was announced on Monday," Anasta said. "He told me that, whatever I do, I shouldn't feel intimidated.
"Not by the reputations of the players around me and not by the opposition.
"If anyone knows about not being intimidated, it's him. Souths wouldn't be back in the competition if he hadn't stuck to the cause.
"He knows what he's talking about, so I'm following his advice."

Mundine, who dramatically quit St George Illawarra in the middle of last season, said he would only consider playing league again for South Sydney or Parramatta.

Probably the biggest change for next season will come in the form of a very familiar friend in the South Sydney Rabbitohs. Their ‘against all odds’ victory in the courts was a true win for the very fabric that rugby league was built on and will be a massive shot in the arm for a game that has disenfranchised so many of its fans over the past five seasons. Sadly though, the resurrection of Souths coincided with the demise of the merged Northern Eagles who were never really going to get off the ground as two old enemies, Manly and Norths, proved a volatile mix. The license has now been left to a penniless Manly, while Norths have been banished off the rugby league map for good.
