After making 47 tackles last weekend, hooker Jason Death was an automatic choice to lead the side in place of injured skipper Adam Muir. "I didn't even consider anyone else," coach Craig Coleman said. "He played 80 minutes and was in the thick of the action."

WHY WE FLOPPED
Rabbitohs captain Adam Muir
Foxsports

17 Mar 2002
THE South Sydney Rabbitohs found things difficult against a red-hot Roosters team on Friday night but have faith in them.

I have said it before but will say it again -- it is great to see Souths back.

The publicity surrounding their return has been enormous but the support they have generated has been even greater and there is no risk the Rabbitohs are terrific for the game.

There were a lot of nerves involved because of the build-up on Friday night and things can only get better now that the pressure of the first game is off them.

South Sydney

Whilst most of the focus so far has been on the Rabbitohs emotional return to the fold coach Craig Coleman has had to assemble a team from scratch.

Amongst the key men brought together by Coleman are captain and back rower Adam Muir and Owen Craigie who may get his chance in the number six shirt. With such a vast array of players arriving at the club a play-off spot would mark the season as a huge success.

9 Mar 2002
It is curious that Murdoch's paper the Daily Telegraph has run a green and red wraparound cover and a 12-page promotion of the club and its first game. When pushing Super League and the News Ltd line as its parent company fought to wrest control from the Australian Rugby League, the Telegraph never mentioned Souths.

News Ltd, bleeding money at the North Queensland Cowboys, Canberra Raiders and Melbourne Storm, and no longer able to count on a return from the Broncos, wants to cut its investment in clubs.

Meanwhile, former poor-boys Souths are running flush with cash. Wallets have been prised open by emotion in the classic tale of the little guy against conniving big business, of preserving history, pride and glory by saving a foundation club in league and the one with the most-ever premierships (20).

SOUTH SYDNEY 22
NORTH QUEENSLAND 20
After struggling to kick a goal for all of last month, Souths won a Country Carnival match on Saturday night with a conversion.

Replacement Noah Sete, who left league when the Rabbitohs were kicked out of the NRL, tied the scores at 20-20 with a late try against the Cowboys at Mackay Showgrounds. It was then left to winger Scott McLean, who earlier kicked two goals, to get the win. "The kick was from in front, so it wasn't really a problem," Souths skipper Adam Muir said yesterday. "But Scott McLean is kicking them well and, even though we've missed a few, I always knew it would be only a matter of time. I think he'll end up one of the highest-percentage kickers in the competition."

The Cowboys led for most of the match in front of a packed 10,532 crowd, Queensland Origin star John Doyle scoring a fine first-half try.
