"It's great to get the opportunity to captain Souths," Craigie said. "With Bryan out, we need someone to speak up and take control on the field." Souths interchange forward Jamie Fitzgerald has struggled all week with a knee injury and will be checked today. If he is out, coach Paul Langmack will be left with the regulation four players on the bench.(SMH - 28 Jun 2003) Brett Kearney is keen to return from an eye-socket injury in Sunday's match against the Warriors. (SMH - 24 Jun 2003) Nathan Blacklock in only two NRL appearances has already crossed for five tries to stamp his mark on Rugby League and the Telstra Premiership. Blacklock had an unhappy 2002 season where he walked out on the Dragons to sign with the alleged sport of rugby union. Blacklock didn't fit in the leather patch brigade and returned to the Dragons recently. Blacklock has given the Dragons a great tryscoring asset and his support play around the ruck is as good as Terry Lamb in his hey day. St George defeated Souths 34-20 in an entertaining match at Win Stadium with halfback Brett Firman along with Blacklock the two main stars. Firman laid on the Dragons opening try for Reece Simmonds with a deft little kick and scored a crucial try in the 50th minute to break the back of the Rabbitohs. Souths battled hard but lacked the leadership of Bryan Fletcher due to State of Origin commitments. The Rabbitohs don't have the depth to cover for a loss of Fletcher's form and ability. The Dragons should be relieved and happy to walk away with the two points with the likes of Jason Ryles, Luke Bailey and Shaun Timmins missing on State of Origin duty. The most pleasing aspect aside from Blacklock's triumph return is the continual improvement in Firman as a halfback. He's a young player who has received many wraps but does look the goods. Ref: Sean Hampstead (World of Rugby League - 24 Jun 2003) Brett Kearney is keen to return from an eye-socket injury in Sunday's match against the Warriors. (SMH - 24 Jun 2003) St George Illawarra Dragons 34 South Sydney Rabbitohs 20 at WIN Stadium on Saturday night Even without their two star Origin props Jason Ryles and Luke Bailey, the Dragons forwards led the way for their side to jump into a share of eighth on the ladder. Without Trent Barrett for the remainder of the NRL season, young halfback Brett Firman has lifted his game to help fill the void. His performance good enough to get the Dragons home. Nathan Blacklock scored three tries to go with his double last weekend, five tries in two games since returning from rugby union. Dragons: Tries: Nathan Blacklock (3), Brett Firman, Reece Simmonds, Lance Thompson, goals: Mark Riddell (3), Firman (2) Rabbitohs: Tries: Justin Smith, Nathan Merritt, Mark Minichiello, Lee Hookey, goals: Smith (2) Ref: Sean Hampstead (NZoom - 23 Jun 2003) ST GEORGE ILLAWARRA v SOUTH SYDNEY - WIN Stadium, tonight 7.35: Players going into games with facial injuries usually say they don't expect to be targeted because attacking the head is illegal. Not Dragons captain Lance Thompson. "I expect to get a whack or two," said Thompson, who has a fracture to his upper cheekbone and eye socket. "I'm not naive enough to think otherwise. It's a tough game." South Sydney interchange back Willie Peters has overcome a shoulder injury and will make the trip to Wollongong, while Dragons coach Nathan Brown still has two players to be omitted from his bench. (Telegraph - 21 Jun 2003) Goal-kicking second-rower Justin Smith returns to Souths' line-up for Saturday night's game against St George Illawarra, replacing NSW Origin recruit Bryan Fletcher. Also back from injury is halfback Willie Peters, but Shane Walker has retained the No.7 jersey. (SMH - 21 Jun 2003) ILLAWARRA ST GEORGE v SOUTH SYDNEY at WIN Stadium at 7.35pm. (Telegraph - 17 Jun 2003) South Sydney Rabbitohs v Melbourne Storm at Aussie Stadium 2.30pm on Sunday afternoon Don't write the Rabbitohs off from winning this. Though they sit alone at the bottom of the table, they are not playing too badly. A win will do them wonders and if they could string back-to-back wins, who knows what could happen? Melbourne lose prop Robbie Kearns for the origin match but other than that remain unaffected. Captain Stephen Kearney will have played the most first grade games by any New Zealander when he takes the field on Sunday. His career, which started at Western Suburbs in 1993 and took in a handful of season with the Warriors, has produced a grand final ring with Melbourne in 1999. Souths try yet another halves combination in Shane Walker and Owen Craigie. With Brett Kearney and Willie peters injured, Walker moves from hooker to halfback. Jason Death returns at hooker in Walker's place. Rabbitohs: 1. Brad Watts, 2. Nathan Merritt, 3. Lee Hookey, 4. David Fa'alogo, 5. Wise Kativerata, 6. Owen Craigie, 7. Shane Walker, 8. (Telegraph - 3 Jun 2003) South Sydney Rabbitohs 32 Wests Tigers 22 at Aussie Stadium on Saturday night Paul Langmack's breathed a huge sigh of relief as his side finally got the monkey off their back and picked up two competition points. Second-rower Justin Smith was outstanding for the Rabbitohs, collecting a personal haul of 20 points. When Nathan Merritt scored to break an 11-match losing streak, the Rabbitohs celebrations clearly showed the passion that is present in the club. The Tigers were disappointing and slip to wins from five matches. The match marked many confrontational moments with Smith and John Skandalis throwing punches at each other at one point. Rabbitohs: Tries: Justin Smith (2), Brett Kearney, Paul Stringer, Nathan Merritt, goals: Smith (6) Tigers: Tries: Willie Manu, Corey Pearson, Michael Buettner, Daniel Fitzhenry, goals: Joel Caine (3) Ref: Matt Cecchin (SMH - 14 April 2003) Captain Bryan Fletcher will be named tonight for Saturday's match against Wests Tigers after serving a one-week suspension, but he remains in doubt due to a back problem. Fellow back- rower Jamie Fitzgerald is out for four to six weeks with a grade-three medial ligament strain. Meanwhile, coach Paul Langmack said he had not cut any players despite telling as many as 10 players last Friday that their form was not up to scratch. "I just spoke to a few players and told them what the situation is at the moment and they respect that," Langmack said. "It was just about improving the performance of the team overall. No one's been cut, no one's been mentioned on that subject. Everyone needs reminding about how good you were and how good you can be ... I don't know what the drama is." Asked whether he expected the players involved to stay with the club, Langmack answered: "You'd have to ask them that."
