2 Jul 2003 Five-eighth Owen Craigie has re-signed with the South Sydney Rabbitohs for another year with an option in his contract to extend beyond that. Craigie, who has been at Souths since they re-entered the competition, has had previous stints at Wests Tigers and the Newcastle Knights, where he was part of the 1997 ARL premiership winning side. "I’m extremely happy to remain a Rabbitoh, my father, manager, and I have worked extremely hard to get this deal done," said Craigie. "I’m very happy with the contract I have received and want to turn it into on-field success for South Sydney. "(Coach) Paul Langmack and the club have shown a lot of faith in me, I’m just happy to get a chance to repay that faith and be a part of the new success driven culture at Souths. The Rabbitohs have been announced several signings already this week with Glenn Hall, Todd Polglase and Shane Marteene coming in from the Bulldogs and Scott Pethybridge putting pen to paper on Monday. Coach Paul Langmack has publicly stated his wish to improve the work ethic at the club and only retain players willing to show the desired level of commitment to improving Souths' position within the compeition. And Langmack believes Craigie fits into his grand scheme. http://www.ozleague.com/news_article.asp?id=47168 South Sydney captain Bryan Fletcher rates himself a 50-50 chance of playing against his former NRL club the Sydney Roosters at Aussie Stadium on Saturday night. Fletcher, part of the Roosters' 2002 premiership-winning side, has not run since suffering a grade one hamstring tear during Origin II last Wednesday at Telstra Stadium. The 29-year-old is desperate to play against his former teammates and lead the side following its heart-breaking 31- 30 loss to the other 2002 finalist, the NZ Warriors, on Sunday in extra time. "We play the Roosters again in round 23 so if I miss out this time then hopefully I'll get another crack at them," said Fletcher, who will give the hamstring a thorough test on Thursday. "But I've been looking forward to this one actually. Nothing spiteful, it's just I spent so many years there and they're good mates of mine. "I want to see what other teams have been experiencing for eight years." Fletcher admitted his prospects of playing the third Origin match in Brisbane on July 16 were bleak if he couldn't recover from his injury by Friday. http://www.nrl.com.au/news.cfm?ArticleID=6154 South Sydney coach Paul Langmack has sent another stern message that the struggling club would not tolerate ill discipline, dropping Nathan Merritt from first grade after the winger missed a training session. Langmack is hell-bent on instilling a winning culture and iron- clad discipline into the Rabbitohs, who sit bottom of the National Rugby League ladder with just two wins this year. He is using his former club the Bulldogs and defending premiers the Sydney Roosters as the models for his regime. Langmack showed his cards earlier this month by standing down centre David Fa'alogo, 21, for missing a Thursday training session. He then did the same to Merritt, whom the club is trying to re- sign, after the 20-year-old flyer didn't turn up to training on Saturday, the eve of the side's devastating golden point loss to NZ Warriors. The Rabbitohs also announced the signings of Bulldogs trio Glenn Hall, Todd Polglase and Shane Marteene, with Langmack saying he wanted to build a culture similar to that of the great Canterbury sides in the 1980s. "It's just an example to be set," said Souths captain Bryan Fletcher, who rates himself a 50-50 chance of recovering from a hamstring injury in time to play against his former club the Roosters at Aussie Stadium on Saturday night. http://www.nrl.com.au/news.cfm?ArticleID=6156 1 Jul 2003 The Allight South Sydney Rabbitohs are proud to announce the signing of Bulldogs trio Glenn Hall, Todd Polglase and Shane Marteene to two year contracts with the club. The trio agreed to terms with the Rabbitohs today, and are exactly the type of players head coach Paul Langmack was looking for to build Souths strength in 2004 and beyond. “These new signings represent exactly the right mixture of youth and experience Souths need for the future,” said Langmack. “Hall and Polglase are young, talented players with a big future in the red and green, and Shane Marteene is a seasoned professional who will bring some much needed backline experience to the Rabbitohs. “We are looking to try and build a culture at the club similar to that of the great Canterbury sides of the 1980’s – if you are not committed and not willing to train hard, you aren’t going to be playing for us.” 22 year old prop Hall – a St Christopher’s junior and NSW Residents’ representative in 2002 - has been a valuable member of the Bulldogs forward rotation, coming into the side whenever incumbents Mark O’Meley or Steven Price were unavailable. Hall provides significant go forward and tough tackling, and will get an opportunity to make an impact for Souths from day one. http://www.souths.com.au/fanzone/viewnewsarticle.asp?ArticleID=411 South Sydney has announced the signing of Bulldogs Glenn Hall, Todd Polglase and Shane Marteene for the next two seasons. The Rabbitohs snared their signatures on Tuesday, the first day after the June 30 anti-tampering deadline. Hall is a 22 year-old prop, while Polglase, 22, and Marteene, 26, are backs. South Sydney coach Paul Langmack said on the team's website he hopes that the players' experiences at the Bulldogs will help the Rabbitohs. "These new signings represent exactly the right mixture of youth and experience Souths need for the future," said Langmack. "Hall and Polglase are young, talented players with a big future in the red and green, and Shane Marteene is a seasoned professional who will bring some much needed backline experience to the Rabbitohs. http://www.optusnet.com.au/sport/news/story/sportal/20030701/00/sport/news40095.inp BULLDOGS prop Glenn Hall has signed a two-year deal with South Sydney. Rabbitohs coach Paul Langmack said he recruited Hall for the 2004/05 seasons to help instill a "Canterbury-like" culture into his National Rugby League club. "We want blokes who want to train hard, blokes who are young and blokes who come from good cultures," Langmack told AAP today. "We want to instill a Canterbury-like culture from the 1980s. If you don't want to train hard then we don't want you." Hall, who made his first grade debut against Souths in June last year, would add depth to the Rabbitohs pack led by Paul Stringer and captain Bryan Fletcher. The 22-year-old will be vying for a starting spot with Scott Geddes, who suffered a season-ending knee injury in the Charity Shield match in February. http://www.dailytelegraph.news.com.au/common/story_page/0,5936,6683363%255E23214,00.html |
